The thing is that people have been predicting the demise of GH since about season 3. I know it won't go on forever, but from what I understand it is still a pretty strong anchor for SyFy and lord knows it is CHEAP to produce.
As far as the short seasons, they have always done that. Actually each "season" is only a half season. I've been told that the reason they do it that way is two-fold. First and foremost it takes some of the "time pressure" off of both the investigation schedule and the editing process. Second, because of the nature of the show and the competition they don't want to go too long without new episodes coming on air. SyFy is pretty cheap and you will notice that some shows have 6 months to a year between seasons. That's okay when you have a show where people want to see what happens next...not so much when you have a show that even the fans don't really anticipate.
ALWAYS keep in mind that these shows are edited to death. When you notice they spent a lot of time talking about a hot spot that later produces evidence, that means that SINCE the area produced something the editors decided it would make sense to use more of the pre-investigation footage for that area.
Unfortunately, the required process of editing also "trains" some really bad investigators (i.e. they think an EVP session should last 5 minutes). We can't really assume that since the only SHOWED us 2 EVP sessions that they ONLY DID 2 EVP sessions.
Gosh I hate being the one to stand up for television shows....I don't even bother watching any of them live anymore.
